Scenario:
Rick Marshall est un paléontologiste ringard. Happé par une spirale spatio-temporelle, il est éjecté dans un monde parallèle. Il se retrouve sans armes ni habileté spéciale pour survivre dans cet univers où se côtoient dinosaures en maraude et autres créatures fantastiques d'un autre monde.
